Paralympian Visits Highlees Primary School

Highlees Primary School will be playing host to Sam Ruddock, 2012 Paralympian and Athletics Mentor, on Thursday, 26th February 2015 from 11.00am to 11.45am.

There will be an exciting opportunity for students aged 7-11years (Key Stage 2) to take photographs and pose interesting questions to Sam on his past experiences and future goals following his 25-minute assembly.  Sam is considered to be a great role model with the ability to inspire and motivate groups of students.

We hope this opportunity will allow Highlees staff and students to work more closing with Sam over the coming years.

A keen rugby and basketball player at Rugby School, Sam was heavily involved in regular competitive sport before arriving at Loughborough University, where he played ‘outside linebacker’ for the ‘Aces’ University American Football team.

After being spotted by a sprinting coach at an ‘Aces’ speed and agility session, Sam became part of UKA’s Aviva Parallel Success programme & the Paralympic Pathway for talented disabled athletes. He ran his first races in April, with his 200M performance sending him to the top of the T35 All-Time list.

His first international meet was at the IPC Croatian Open, taking gold in the 100M and silver in the 200M.

After only 6 months training Sam was selected for the London 2012 Paralympic games in the T35 100m and 200m. Still a novice in the sport Sam exceeded expectations just missing out on both finals and placing 9th in both events and running a PB in the 200m.

The next aim is Rio 2016 where Sam hopes to build on his rapid progress and put himself in contention for a medal.
