Highlees Primary School Eyrescroft Primary School

Highlees & Eyrescroft

January 2019

The New Year is now well under way and I hope that you all enjoyed the holidays.

Across the Federation everyone has come back focused and committed to ensuring your child gets the very best out of each and every school day.

We have been working extremely hard as a team to address areas we feel need focus and attention and plans are well under way to target these areas with a fresh approach. There are lots of exciting and new challenges in store and we remain absolutely committed to securing the future of all of our students.

This term both schools are looking at developing writing. By planning meaningful writing opportunities we are aiming for children to be more self confident about writing and find enjoyment in it.

The focused fortnights will spotlight key skills linked to writing e.g. spelling, handwriting and punctuation. We would appreciate your support if your children bring spellings home to learn.

This is always a very hot topic and is very important in ensuring your child gets the most out of their time in school both socially and academically. We see first hand the negative impact that arriving late to school has on children. Please continue to get your child to school on time so that they have time to settle into their day with the classmates and do not miss any vital learning.

We are aiming for 97% attendance this year. Both schools all track persistent absence and lates. If you are experiencing problems with getting your child to school please contact the school. We are here to help.

School visits enhance learning and help children put into context the information they are learning in the classroom. We are aware that it is sometimes difficult to find the extra money for the school visits. In an attempt to help the schools try to inform parents in advance of all upcoming visits so that they can budget in advance.  Also where we can the schools are subsiding part of the costs. Unfortunately if the schools do not receive sufficient contributions they are not able to run these visits.

We are expecting some cold weather in the coming months so please make sure your children come to school with warmer clothing. If we are to trust the weathermen we may me looking at snow sometime soon. If we get into the situation where it looks like we may be going to experience snow we will provide updates and information as early as we have it. Posts will be via the Heart FM radio and our website as soon as decisions have been reached. If it does come to this please bear with us. There are many factors that need to be taken into account when making the decision to close the school in the event of heavy snow. This is never a decision taken lightly.

Keep an eye out for letters and other communications about the things happening in school this term. We enjoy having parents in school. The staff and children always work especially hard to make sure these events are really special. Looking forward to seeing you.
