Medical

Medicine

The school will not administer any prescribed or non-prescribed medication to any pupil during the school day without written consent from their parent/carer. All medication must be in the original packaging and dosage requirements must be detailed.

If administration of prescribed medication during the school day is part of the IHCP for the pupil, arrangements must be in place and staff must be appropriately trained. The school must have written permission from parents, staff and the Trust Legal and Governance Director when agreeing to allow them to administer ongoing medication in this manner.

Parents may come into school to administer medicine to their own child.  Children are allowed to bring inhalers into school only if they are able to self-administer them.  All inhalers should be clearly labelled with the child's name.

First Aid

Some members of staff are qualified first-aiders.  Teaching Assistants and Midday Supervisors will treat minor accidents in school; first-aiders will be involved when necessary. Accidents where children received first aid treatment are logged in an Accident Book.  A record of the accident is always sent home with the child.  If a child has an injury that requires medical treatment from a doctor or the hospital, a specific form is filled in and sent to the LA Health and Safety Department.

Medical Appointments

Where possible, we would appreciate it if you could avoid arranging medical or dentist appointments for your child during the school day.  If you child has an appointment with the doctor, dentist, optician, etc, which involves release from lessons, please arrange in advance to collect your child from school.

Illness

When your child is unwell please do not send them to school. Telephone the school to let us know about the absence on the first day before 9.30am.  On your child's return to school please send a letter explaining their absence.  It is very important that we know where to contact you during the day in case your child becomes ill or has an accident.  Please make sure you tell us if your home or work telephone numbers change.

School Nurse

Our school nurse, visits the school on a regular basis. If you have any concerns regarding your child's health please make an appointment to see her.

Please see link to Supporting pupils with medical needs policy for more information.
