Numeracy

Here at Highlees we follow the Mathematics National Curriculum for England. This curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

The curriculum covers the following areas: Number, Measurement, Geometry, Statistics, Ratio and Proportion and Algebra.

At Highlees we strongly believe that it is essential for all children to build a strong mathematical foundation in their time here with us to support them in everyday life. We do this through daily maths lesson in all year groups, as well as embedding opportunities for pupils to further develop their mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding through other areas of the curriculum such as science, technology, PE and History. We ensure pupils have regular opportunities to use and apply what they have learnt, this includes ‘Find Out Friday’ when pupils in KS1 and KS2 have a lesson purely focused on problem solving.

To ensure consistency for our children, we have a calculation policy. This details the methods pupils use for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Further information on this, including some video clips, will be available soon for you to use to support your children.
