Safeguarding children means keeping them safe from neglect and abuse. Anyone that comes into contact with children and families has a responsibility to safeguard and promote their welfare. This means;

• Protecting children from maltreatment;

• Preventing impairment of children’s health or development

• Ensuring children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care

• Taking action to enable all children to have the best life chances.

Staff at Highlees Primary School have had safeguarding training to give them the required knowledge to identify signs of abuse and neglect, around the school we display who the ‘Designated people for safeguarding’ are, this ensures that staff and children know who to go to if they are concerned about the welfare of a child or peer.

New employees, supply agency staff and permanent staff are all given the ‘’keeping children safe in education - September 2022” to read and sign to acknowledge that they understand their responsibilities when visiting or working in the school. 

Any visitor to the school is required to provide ID and are given the Safeguarding Guidance leaflet.

 

What we do when we are concerned about a child

We work closely with the ‘Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Safeguarding Children Partnership Board’ ensuring that as a school we access current, relevant training for designated staff, we also adopt their policies for keeping children safe.  

Occasionally, we need to make a referral to Children’s Social Care when a child is at risk of harm, In accordance with local Information Sharing protocols, we will ensure that information is shared securely and sensitively.  Information will only be shared with other services where it is deemed necessary and proportionate to ensure that children and young people are safe and receive the right service

When a child is at risk of significant harm, the law states that a referral to Children’s Social Care or the Police may be made without the permission from parents / carers
